Westfield Blue Sweeps Twinbill

The Westfield Blue used a blend of solid pitching and some big performances at the plate to win a pair of baseball games on a beautiful Sunday afternoon on Gumbert 1.

"The players had their A games with them today," said Coach Murray. "The Westfield White team is among the best teams around and Scotch Plains can beat you if you don't come ready to play. Our boys pitched, hit and played defense at a high level and the result was two big North Jersey All-Star Baseball League victories."

In the opener, Owen Murray, Rowan Oberman and Parker Hess turned in strong pitching performances to defeat the Westfield White squad, 8-7. OMurr pitched the first 2 2/3 before giving the baseball to Rowan, who got the last out of the bottom of the third to stop a potential Westfield White rally. Parker Hess threw three tremendous innings to hold off Westfield White.

The Blue Bombers exploded for six runs in the third inning to take a 6-4 lead with the scoring all coming with two outs. Justin Lanker walked, stole second and scored on a base hit by Owen Brancatella. After Michael Jeffery walked, Tyler Roth scorched a two-RBI hit into the gap in left-center, plating OB and MJ. Rowan knocked in Tyler with a single and Steven Barmakian pushed Rowan across with a rocket off the fence for a long single. Parker drove in the sixth run of the frame with a hard single to left and the two-run lead.

WF Blue added another run in the fifth when Owen Murray singled, stole a couple bases and scored on an RBI single off the fence by Justin Lin.

The final run of the day for Blue came in the top of the sixth when Parker laced another base hit and scored on a single by George Murray, who early in the game made a great catch and tag at the plate that kept the
White team from posting a run.

The Westfield White team had the tying runner on third with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Parker threw a fastball in the dirt that got passed Michael Jeffery. MJ reacted quickly and tossed the ball to Parker, who tagged out the baserunner trying to score and end the game.

In the second game. Westfield Blue downed a tough Scotch Plains team, 3-1 behind the strong pitching of Justin Lin, Rowan and Tyler, who combined to strike out six batters and allow just three hits.

Rowan Oberman scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first, working out a walk, stealing a base anc crossing home plate on a hard single by Parker. The Blue pushed two across in the second with OMurr banging a one-out double to the gap in left center. Justin Lin followed with a scorched single to left, scoring Owen. Danny Criscuolo moved Justin to third with a grounder to the left side. With two outs, Owen Brancatella lined a base hit to right center to give Westfield the final 3-1 lead.

Defensively, Tyler was, well, Tyler, with several diving plays that made the crowd gasp. Owen Murray was outstanding in center field while Justin Lankler made some spectacular plays at both second base and in right field. Owen Colwell, in addition to banging a base hit to left in the Scotch Plains game, played a solid third and shortstop.

Game balls were presented to Parker and Owen B for their performances in the doubleheader.
