Westfield Blue started off the 2009 summer travel season on a positive note Monday night by winning their first league game 11-3 over Bridgewater National at Gumbert Field.
Bridgewater came out swinging; the leadoff batter scorched a line drive to right but Owen Brancatella quickly got in position and caught it. The number 2 batter hit a deep fly to center, this time caught by Owen Murray. And so the game went -solid pitching from Justin Lin and Tyler Roth combined with nearly flawless defense held Bridgewater scoreless until the 4th inning.
The WB offense did most of their damage in the 2nd inning. The rally started with a single by Parker Hess, a walk from Owen Colwell and then a 2 RBI rip from Lin. Next back to back singles from Dan Criscuolo and OB were followed by a walk from Michael Jeffery, a single from Roth, a walk from Rowan Oberman and singles from Steven Barmakian, Owen Murray and Devanney-Murray. Hess and Colwell had their 2nd at bats of the inning and by the time the third out was recorded, WB had scored 8 runs with 13 batters coming to the plate.
Several defensive plays really took the wind out of any Bridgewater rally. For example, in the 5th with a runner on second and one out, a Bridgewater batter hit a line drive single to right field. Jeffery charged the ball and fired to Oberman at first base to get the out and rob the batter of a hit. Oberman saw the other runner advancing and threw home to George Devanney-Murray. The runner beat the throw but Devanney-Murray noticed that the runner missed home plate and tagged him for the third out.
