WESTFIELD BLUE PLAYS A SUNDAY SCORCHER WITH A TOUGH EXTRA INNING LOSS AGAINST SOUTH ORANGE

It was a stifling day and a tough 7th inning loss in Warren for Westfield Blue. The game was tied up 6 to 6 after the sixth inning and although Westfield brought some power to the bat in the top of the 7th and scored two runs, S. Orange loaded up the bases and squeaked in 3 to take the game with a final score of 9 to 8.

Westfield, first at bat, started strong with a great lead off hit by Rowan Oberman to center field for a single. Steven Barmakian followed with a beautiful drive to center field but was caught out. Parker Hess continued the center field focus with another beauty. With runners on 1st and 2nd, Owen Murray stepped up to the plate. Owen M put another bomb in center field. Unfortunately, a S.Orange double play ended the inning without a Westfield score.

Westfield showed it pitching strength with Owen Murray opening the game. The intimidation continued as Steve Barmakian put a great stop on the first batter and easily threw the runner OUT at first base. Justin Lankler followed with a huge catch- OUT and Justin Lin ended the inning for S. Orange with a scoop and step taking the OUT at first base.
Score at the end of the 1st…0-0.

Though there were some fabulous hits by Justin Lin, Owen Colwell, and George Murray, no runs were scored for Westfield in the second inning. In the bottom of the inning, South Orange had a strong showing when their first batter smashed a home run to center field. However, Westfield brought pitching heat from Owen Murray and second baseman Justin Lankler slammed their momentum by making a great play to first for the OUT. S. Orange brought 2 more runners home but our #7, Justin Lin cut them off with two consecutive scoops and OUTS at first base.
The end of the inning score is 3-0 South Orange.

The 3rd inning began by Westfield with a soaring hit to right field by Justin Lankler but was caught out. Owen Brancatella came next with a HUGE hit to left field for a single. A pitching error by South Orange sent Owen B to 3rd, and a beautiful RBI single by Rowan Oberman brought the first run to Westfield. Steven B had another nice showing at bat but was thrown out at 1st. Parker Hess continued the Westfield batting strength with a nice line drive RBI to center field sending Rowan home for Westfield’s second run. Owen Murray with a keen eye walked to 1st base but S. Orange pitcher, Paradis then dominated to end the inning, keeping Westfield at 2 runs.

Justin Lin pitched a great inning for Westfield but, in the third, it was the fielding that took the spot light. Owen Murray snatched a bomb from the sky deep in center field –OUT. Rowan Oberman scooped and got the second OUT at 1st and Owen Colwell sealed their fate with a great catch at third- OUT. As the S. Orange batters were taken out 1- 2- 3, Westfield was going strong.

Though Owen Colwell popped out to lead off, the 4th inning was entirely Westfield’s. Second at bat, Justin Lin put a huge single into center field. Dan Criscuolo and Michael Jeffery followed with walks. Although a new pitcher was put on the mound for S. Orange, Rowan Oberman walked and Justin Lin came home as Westfield tied up the game with their first run of the inning. Westfield #24, Steven Barmakian then took the plate to seal his nickname as “the bomber’ with a GIGANTIC bomb to right field, a triple for Steven and 3 RBI’s for Westfield!!!!! Parker Hess then put a nice fly ball into right field but was caught out and the third S. Orange pitcher for the inning was finally able to end the Westfield domination at 4 runs in the fourth.

S. Orange began with a strong hit putting their batter on second base. A single brought them an RBI but it cost them as Dan Criscuolo took the batter OUT at first. Their show ended there as to Justin Lin threw THREE beautiful strikes to end the inning.
After a nearly flawless performance, Westfield is securely in the lead 6 to 4 at the end of the fourth inning.

The 5th inning began with a great hit by George Murray but a quick play took him out at first. After a hit by the pitcher put Owen Colwell on first, Justin Lin and Dan Criscuolo had great attempts but S. Orange took 2 more outs at first.

S. Orange had another weak inning. It began with a smooth STRIKE OUT by Justin Lin for Westfield and was followed by a fantastic double play as Dan Criscuolo made an incredible catch and quickly directed the ball to Rowan at first for the DOUBLE PLAY. Westfield Blue holds their lead!!!!

Score: Westfield- 6, S. Orange- 4

In the top of the sixth, Michael Jeffery led off with a great single but was out at 1st. Westfield followed with two pop outs to end their at bat.

In the bottom of the sixth, Westfield pitching by Rowan Oberman was strong. Fast fielding by Owen Murray held the first batter for S. Orange at 1st. After a walk, Rowan Oberman showed his quickness with a line drive snatch and play to first for the OUT. Though, S. Orange did get the RBI, closing in with their fifth run. A single to center brought S. Orange the RBI they needed to tie up the game. But, Rowan came back with the heat for a crucial STRIKE OUT and Justin Lin put them away with the third OUT at 1st.

With the temperature nearing 90, the game headed in to extra innings. A tough strike out for Owen Murray began the inning but Westfield quickly recovered with a smash hit down the third base line by #15, George Devanney-Murray. Owen Colwell had a great hit but was out at 1st. Justin Lin squarely met the challenge and hit a solid single putting Westfield in the lead with an RBI. An error by S. Orange then placed Justin Lin at second base perfectly positioning him to score Westfield’s 8th run when Dan Criscuolo made a great hit to short. Ready to meet the demand, Michael Jeffery took the plate but a lucky throw caught our stealer at third for the final out. The top of the inning ended with Westfield Blue up by 2 after tremendous batting under very tough conditions.

Parker Hess showed his ability to handle the pressure and the heat by taking the mound as S. Orange took the plate in the bottom of the 7th. Through some singles and walks, S. Orange crept into position for some scoring. Dan C and Justin L made a great play at first and Justin Lankler stepped in to pitch but a deep hit to right field allowed S. Orange to bring in the runs they needed for a win.
